South Africa’s festive season crackdown has led to over 16,800 arrests between December 1 and 7, 2025, including more than 2,600 for serious violent crimes and 1,000 for illegal alcohol sales.
Police also arrested 771 drunk drivers and seized 25,000 litres of alcohol, while recovering two firearms, including an SAPS-issued rifle, from two Mozambican nationals.
The operation, part of the Safer Festive Season Initiative, follows a deadly mass shooting in Pretoria that killed 12 people.
Despite enforcement efforts, crime experts warn that underlying issues like territorial disputes and drug-related violence persist, and concerns remain over public safety, judicial delays, and housing rights.
