Slovakia’s government dismantled its independent whistleblower office, replacing it with a controlled body, sparking concerns over corruption and democracy.
Slovakia’s parliament approved a government bill to dismantle the independent whistleblower protection office established in 2021, replacing it with a new body under government control.
The move, backed by Prime Minister Robert Fico’s coalition, aims to address alleged political abuse of the previous system but has drawn strong criticism from opposition leaders, the prosecutor-general, the European Union, and human rights groups.
They warn the change undermines anti-corruption efforts, weakens the rule of law, and risks democratic backsliding.
The law passed via fast-track procedure with minimal debate, and while President Peter Pellegrini has expressed concerns and may veto it, the government holds enough support to override a veto.
The whistleblower office said the decision would severely weaken protections and erode public trust.
