Ohio advances bill to fund halal and kosher meals in public schools.
Ohio lawmakers are advancing House Bill 562, a Democratic-backed proposal to fund halal and kosher meal options in public schools and universities, aiming to support students with religious dietary needs.
The $300,000 pilot program, backed by seven Democratic co-sponsors, would be funded through the Ohio Department of Agriculture.
Introduced in October by Rep. Beryl Brown Piccolantonio, the bill has undergone one committee hearing and does not currently cover non-religious dietary preferences, though that could be expanded later.
Illinois has already mandated such meals, and other states are considering similar measures.
