Iowa lawmakers rejected a study on public pension changes, keeping the current system intact.
Iowa lawmakers are considering a study on public employee retirement benefits, including a potential voluntary 401(k)-style plan for future workers, but have ruled out immediate changes to the state’s defined-benefit pension system, IPERS.
The discussion follows a recommendation from Governor Kim Reynolds’ efficiency task force, which urged a review of public-sector benefits compared to private-sector offerings.
While Republican leaders say no action will be taken in the 2026 session, they remain open to studying long-term sustainability and reform options.
IPERS, which serves about 424,000 members and is 92% funded, remains stable, with officials and advocates expressing concern over potential disruptions to retirement security.
The Public Retirement Systems Committee did not approve the study during its December 9 meeting.
