Ghana’s president urges African health industry investment, announces $200M fund for non-communicable diseases.
Ghanaian President John Dramani Mahama has called for private sector co-investment in Africa’s health industrialization during the World Health Expo Leaders Africa Summit in Accra, urging vaccine, pharmaceutical, and medical technology companies to establish production and research hubs across the continent.
He emphasized a shift from dependency to shared innovation and investment, citing lessons from the pandemic and highlighting the African Continental Free Trade Area’s 1.3 billion-person market and the African Medicines Agency’s role in regulatory alignment.
The government announced a GH¢2.1 billion (US$200 million) allocation to the MahamaCares trust fund to combat non-communicable diseases, improve diagnostic access, and expand infrastructure, particularly in underserved areas.
Health Minister Kwabena Mintah Akandoh detailed Ghana’s digital health upgrades, including modernized labs, imaging systems, and integrated digital platforms to enhance care delivery and disease tracking.
The summit, attended by over 350 health leaders, focused on building resilient, equitable health systems through public-private partnerships and innovation.
