Former Singapore Law Society leaders demand EGM over government-appointed president, citing threats to independence.
A group of former Singaporean Law Society leaders is pushing for an extraordinary general meeting on December 22 over concerns that Dinesh Singh Dhillon, a non-elected, government-appointed council member, was chosen as president.
The move follows criticism that the appointment undermines the Bar’s independence and breaks longstanding practice of electing the president from among members chosen by the society’s 6,400 lawyers.
The EGM, requested by 25 members after the society failed to act by December 8, aims to formally raise governance concerns, though it won’t overturn the election.
The Law Society held a tea session on December 10 to address concerns but has not commented on the internal process.
