EU debates banning plant-based foods from using meat terms like "burger" and "sausage."
EU lawmakers and member states are debating a proposal to restrict meat-related terms like "burger" and "sausage" to animal-based products, aiming to prevent consumer confusion and protect livestock farmers.
The move, backed by agricultural interests and spurred by a fivefold rise in plant-based meat consumption since 2011, faces opposition from food retailers, environmentalists, and public figures who say current labeling laws are sufficient and that the rules could stifle innovation.
The issue has resurfaced after similar efforts were blocked or overturned, including a French ban struck down by the EU’s top court.
With no agreement yet reached and negotiations ongoing, the outcome remains uncertain amid shifting political dynamics following the 2024 European elections.
