A 24-year-old man, Aaron Botley, was sentenced for stealing a taxi driver’s wallet on Boxing Day after a night of heavy drinking.
Botley, who admitted to being severely intoxicated, robbed the driver during a late-night ride in Oxford, snatching a wallet containing £400, personal documents, and a sentimental note from the driver’s mother.
The victim suffered severe emotional distress, including anxiety and sleeplessness, affecting his ability to work and pay rent.
Botley, who changed the destination to avoid a higher fare, was given a 24-month suspended sentence, six months of mental health rehab, and 15 days of rehabilitation activities.
His friend, Thomas Bartrip, who helped discard the wallet, denies the charge and faces trial in November.
