A 15-year-old Irish activist, Cara Darmody, is leading a 50-hour protest outside Leinster House to draw attention to a severe backlog in Assessments of Need (AONs) for children with disabilities, with only 7% completed on time in 2025.
The assessments, which determine access to health and support services, are legally required to be finished within six months.
Darmody, motivated by her brothers' struggles with autism and intellectual disabilities, is calling for an emergency national and international recruitment effort for therapists and psychologists, criticizing a recent government campaign that went unnoticed by both HSE staff and private providers.
Her protest coincides with a Dáil debate and is backed by opposition parties.
