Members of the INDIA bloc in Tamil Nadu are collecting signatures to file an impeachment notice against Madras High Court Judge GR Swaminathan, following his December 2025 ruling allowing a lamp to be lit near a dargah during the Karthigai Deepam festival. The move, supported by DMK and allies, cites concerns over judicial bias and communal tensions, requiring at least 100 Lok Sabha MPs to initiate the process. A three-member committee would investigate allegations of misconduct, with removal needing a two-thirds majority in both houses of Parliament. No Indian judge has ever been impeached.
