The Subaru Telescope discovered an exoplanet and brown dwarf, key targets for NASA’s Roman Space Telescope.
The Subaru Telescope on Mauna Kea has made its first major discoveries through the OASIS program, identifying an exoplanet, HIP 54515 b, and a brown dwarf, HIP 71618 B.
The exoplanet, 271 light-years away in Leo, is about 18 times Jupiter’s mass and orbits at Neptune-like distance.
The brown dwarf, 169 light-years away in Bootes, is roughly 60 times Jupiter’s mass and orbits a young star.
These findings, confirmed via gravitational effects and direct imaging, are the first from OASIS and provide key targets for NASA’s upcoming Nancy Grace Roman Space Telescope, which will use the brown dwarf to test technology for imaging Earth-like planets.
