A $3,000 reward is being offered for information leading to an arrest in the theft of a human skull from a protected ancient burial site near Kanab, Utah.
The Utah School and Institutional Trust Lands Administration and the Attorney General’s Office confirmed the site, believed to date to the Basketmaker era, was disturbed, with the skull removed.
The theft was first reported in January after a social media post showed someone posing with the remains.
Authorities say the act is a criminal offense and a violation of ancestral and scientific heritage.
The exact location and images of the site are withheld to prevent further damage.
Investigators are urging the public to come forward with tips, offering anonymity, and can be contacted at 801-538-5113 or aginvestcomplaints@agutah.gov.
