NSW to redevelop Wentworth Park into 7,300 homes and green spaces after greyhound racing ends in 2027.
The New South Wales government plans to redevelop the historic Wentworth Park greyhound racing venue in central Sydney into a mixed-use precinct with about 7,300 homes, green spaces, sports fields, and transport hubs, following the lease expiration in 2027.
The project, aimed at addressing Sydney’s housing shortage, will transfer the land to the City of Sydney and prioritize urban densification.
Premier Chris Minns acknowledged the site’s cultural legacy but stressed the need for sustainable growth amid a state housing target of 377,000 homes by 2029, with only around 43,000 built so far.
The move follows a previous rejected proposal to convert Rosehill Racecourse into a large residential area.
The redevelopment includes plans for 20 community sports fields and infrastructure upgrades, though the racing industry criticized the lack of a transition plan.
Greyhound racing at Wentworth Park will end in September 2027.
