An inquiry found NSW greyhound racing unsafe, urging closure unless reforms are made.
An independent inquiry into New South Wales’ greyhound racing industry, led by Lea Drake and released in July 2024, found no track met 2020 safety standards despite rebuilds, citing widespread failures including financial mismanagement, poor oversight, and a toxic workplace culture.
The 722-page report recommended shutting down the industry by year’s end unless new standards are adopted, urging a full-time chief veterinarian, better reporting on unexplained dog deaths, and stronger rehoming oversight.
While Racing and Gaming Minister David Harris granted an 18-month extension to implement reforms, Greyhound Racing NSW CEO Steve Griffin disputed some findings, calling the sport highly regulated, and expressed surprise over the closure of Wentworth Park for housing and green space, warning of financial harm.
The government’s move coincided with the inquiry’s release, with federal Greens senator Mehreen Faruqi calling it a milestone for animal welfare.
