A Nigerian court denied Nnamdi Kanu’s request to transfer from Sokoto prison, citing procedural issues and lack of proper notice.
A Nigerian federal high court in Abuja has denied Nnamdi Kanu’s ex-parte request to transfer him from Sokoto prison to a facility closer to the court, ruling that the application could not proceed without notifying the federal government and Nigerian Correctional Service.
The court, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, rejected the immediate transfer request due to procedural flaws, including a premature appeal filed before the final judgment.
Kanu, convicted on terrorism charges and sentenced to life imprisonment, argued the remote location hindered his ability to prepare his appeal and consult with legal representatives.
The judge ordered the application converted into a motion on notice and adjourned the case to January 27, 2026, for proper service and response.
The court also dismissed Kanu’s younger brother’s attempt to appear on his behalf, citing lack of legal standing.
