Los Angeles prosecutors won’t seek death penalty for man charged in actor Johnny Wactor’s 2024 killing during a botched catalytic converter theft.
Los Angeles prosecutors have decided not to seek the death penalty for Robert Isaiah Barceleau, 19, charged in the May 2024 killing of actor Johnny Wactor, 37, during a botched catalytic converter theft in downtown Los Angeles.
Barceleau faces life in prison without parole on murder and robbery charges, including special circumstances for murder during a robbery and firearm use.
His co-defendant, Sergio Estrada, 19, faces similar charges but not the special circumstances or firearm allegation.
Both pleaded not guilty, and a pretrial hearing is set for January 14, 2025.
Police said Barceleau admitted to shooting Wactor, claiming self-defense, while Estrada said he objected to the shooting.
Evidence includes fingerprints on a floor jack, surveillance photos showing the men with a weapon and cash, and testimony from a co-worker who saw Wactor confront the suspects before being shot.
Two other men were sentenced to prison for lesser roles in the incident.
