India to deploy 3 million census workers by Jan 2026 for 2027 digital census with caste data.
The Registrar General of India has directed all states and union territories to appoint census functionaries—enumerators and supervisors—by January 15, 2026, for the 2027 Census.
Around 3 million personnel will be deployed, with each enumerator covering 700–800 people and one supervisor overseeing six enumerators, plus a 10% reserve.
Eligible candidates include teachers, clerks, and government staff, while supervisors must hold higher ranks.
District collectors and municipal commissioners will serve as principal officers.
The census will be fully digital, conducted in two phases: House Listing from April to September 2026, followed by Population Enumeration in February 2027, with a reference date of March 1, 2027—except in select regions where it will occur in September 2026.
Caste enumeration will be included, as approved in April 2025.
A web portal, CMMS, will track appointments and field progress.
