Georgia Rep. Sharon Henderson arrested on federal charges for fraudulently claiming $17,800 in pandemic unemployment benefits.
Georgia State Representative Sharon Henderson, a Democrat from Covington, was arrested on federal charges for allegedly fraudulently collecting over $17,800 in pandemic unemployment benefits between 2020 and 2021.
Prosecutors say she falsely claimed to have worked for Henry County Schools and lost her job due to the pandemic, despite having worked only five days as a substitute teacher in 2018 and knowing substitutes were ineligible.
She submitted weekly benefit claims, including eight after taking office in June 2021, while serving in the state House.
Henderson faces two counts of theft of government funds and ten counts of making false statements.
She is expected to plead not guilty and was released on a $10,000 bond.
The case is ongoing, and a state review commission may determine her ability to remain in office.
