Former Australian minister Graham Richardson, known for his fierce style and scandals, died at 76 after battling cancer.
Graham Richardson, a former Australian Labor senator and minister known for his influential yet controversial role in politics, has died at 76. A key figure during the Hawke and Keating governments, he was remembered by Prime Minister Anthony Albanese for championing environmental protection, particularly the Daintree Rainforest. Richardson, nicknamed the "minister for kneecaps" for his aggressive tactics, faced multiple scandals, including allegations of corruption tied to property deals and the 1999 "cash for comments" affair, and resigned in 1992 after using political influence to help a relative in the Marshall Islands. Despite his contentious legacy, he received tributes from across the political spectrum. He had battled chondrosarcoma since 2016 and was laid to rest in a state funeral at St James’ Church in Sydney.
