Joseline Peña-Melnyk is expected to become Maryland’s next House of Delegates speaker, with a vote set for December 16, 2025, following endorsements from top Democratic leaders and the withdrawal of her main rivals.
If elected, she would be the first Afro-Latina, second woman, and first person born in the Dominican Republic to lead the chamber, succeeding Adrienne Jones, who stepped down after six years as the first Black and first female speaker.
Peña-Melnyk, a Democrat since 2007, chairs the Health and Government Operations Committee and has focused on mental health, equity, and government accountability.
She faces challenges including a $1.5 billion budget gap and potential veto overrides by Governor Wes Moore.
