A decommissioned Navy ship was sunk off South Carolina to create a new artificial reef, supporting marine life and recreation.
A decommissioned Navy torpedo recovery vessel was sunk off South Carolina’s coast on December 7, becoming the state’s 612th artificial reef.
After being abandoned for over four years and removed from a marsh, the ship underwent environmental cleanup to remove hazardous materials.
The project, led by SCDNR, CCA South Carolina, and Steven’s Towing, marks the 25th reef deployment through their partnership and is partially funded by CCA.
The reef is expected to support marine species like snapper and grouper, boost recreational fishing and diving, and enhance coastal ecosystems.
