Chennai launches 17 cattle sheds and enforces fines to curb roaming cows, while pet licensing surges.
The Greater Chennai Corporation is enlisting volunteers and NGOs to manage 17 new cattle sheds across 15 city zones amid a growing problem of roaming cattle, following a 2024 survey that found nearly 22,875 animals in the city.
To reduce road hazards, the civic body has deployed enforcement teams, imposed a Rs 10,000 fine for wandering cattle, and impounded over 16,000 animals since 2021, collecting Rs 4.43 crore in fines.
Four sheds are already operational, with construction ongoing on the rest.
Simultaneously, pet licensing has surged, with 96,056 registrations and nearly 50,000 licenses issued ahead of a December 14 deadline, supported by vaccination and microchipping at six clinics.
