Beetaloo Energy gains approval to sell gas from Aboriginal land, boosting Northern Territory energy security.
Beetaloo Energy has secured final Northern Territory government approval to sell appraisal gas from its Carpentaria project, marking a major step toward producing onshore gas in the region.
The Beneficial Use of Gas (BUG) agreement, the first on Aboriginal Freehold land, allows the company to redirect gas previously flared into the local energy system under a 10-year deal, with a baseline supply of 25 terajoules per day and potential to reach 35 TJ/day.
Initial production is expected by mid-2026, using a repurposed $2.5 million gas plant and a $30 million credit facility from Macquarie Bank.
The project aims to address growing gas shortages in the Top End, especially after cyclone damage to the Blacktip facility, and reduce environmental impact by curbing flaring.
It is part of Beetaloo’s 28.9 million-acre holding in the McArthur Basin, with estimated recoverable gas reserves of 1.6 trillion cubic feet in the 2C category and over 200 trillion cubic feet in the broader Beetaloo Sub-basin.
The development is seen as pivotal for the territory’s energy security and economic growth.
