A bat in Nevada tested positive for a fungus causing white-nose syndrome, threatening 14 local bat species.
The fungus Pseudogymnoascus destructans, linked to white-nose syndrome, has been detected for the first time in Nevada on a California leaf-nosed bat in Lake Mead National Recreation Area.
Found during routine monitoring with no visible disease signs, the pathogen poses a threat to 14 of Nevada’s 23 bat species, especially hibernating Myotis bats.
While harmless to humans and pets, it spreads through bat contact and contaminated gear.
Nevada had been preparing since 2014, and officials are now intensifying surveillance, equipment sterilization, habitat protection, and public education to slow its spread.
