Australia’s first wind farm will shut down, with turbines dismantled and land restored, as a model for future decommissioning.
Australia’s first major wind farm, Codrington in Victoria, will be decommissioned by Pacific Blue, which plans to dismantle 14 outdated 1.3-megawatt turbines within 12 months of stopping power generation.
The company will remove steel, aluminum, copper, and cast iron components and the 1.5-meter concrete pedestals but leave the bulk of the 20,000-tonne underground foundations buried and covered with soil and vegetation.
The site must be restored to grazing condition for three host landowners and regulators.
Pacific Blue is funding UNSW research to develop recycling methods for fiberglass and composite turbine blades, a major industry challenge.
The project could set a precedent as at least 3,000 turbines across 110 sites approach end-of-life.
El primer parque eólico de Australia se cerrará, con las turbinas desmontadas y la tierra restaurada, como modelo para el desmantelamiento futuro.
