Auckland’s $5.5B underground rail link opens Sept 2026, boosting capacity and reliability after major upgrades.
Auckland’s $5.5 billion City Rail Link, New Zealand’s first underground railway, is on track for a September 2026 opening, with construction nearing completion and testing underway across 16,000 systems.
A major network closure from December 27, 2025, to January 28, 2026, will allow critical upgrades, including track repairs, platform construction, and level crossing removals, with limited train services during parts of the period.
Further closures are planned for testing in January and April 2026, supported by replacement bus services.
The project will boost peak-hour capacity to 19,000 passengers per hour, connect the Eastern and Western Lines via tunnels, and introduce 23 new trains and 160 staff.
Officials stress the work is essential for a safer, more frequent, and reliable rail network.
