Vietnam and Malaysia rescued 15 crew members from a distressed cargo ship off Malaysia’s coast on Dec. 5, 2025.
Vietnam and Malaysia conducted a joint maritime rescue operation on December 5, 2025, saving all 15 crew members of the St. Kitts & Nevis-flagged cargo ship KAYO, which developed a 15-degree list 65 nautical miles east of Malaysia’s coast.
The vessel, en route from Lumut to Vietnam’s Quang Ninh province, faced rough seas with strong winds and high waves.
After the captain issued a distress call, Vietnam’s MRCC coordinated with Malaysia’s MRCC, leading to a swift response by the KM SEBATIK coast guard vessel.
All crew members were rescued and escorted to safety near Kemaman Port.
This marks the second such joint rescue this year, reflecting strengthened regional cooperation in maritime emergency response.
