A cliffside bookstore in Guangxi’s Mianhua Sinkhole, opened in May 2025, has drawn over 100,000 visitors worldwide.
Featuring 10,000 books in a 150-meter-long canyon-like arrangement, it’s sheltered by the sinkhole’s natural structure.
Designed by He Zhijian, inspired by Japan’s Tsutaya and Hangzhou’s version, construction was likened to “acrobatics on a cliff.” The site includes a 600-square-meter theater and hosted its first music festival.
Once isolated, the area now benefits from tourism, with over 4 million yuan in dividends distributed and 90 of 108 employees from local villages, boosting economic growth and reducing migration.
