UN urged to end Bangladesh's ban on Awami League, citing mass arrests and suppressed political rights ahead of 2026 elections.
A human rights group has urged the UN to intervene in Bangladesh over the May 12 ban on the Awami League, imposed by the interim government under the Anti-Terrorism Act.
The group, Justice Makers Bangladesh in France, says the move has halted all political activities, including protests and social media engagement, undermining the party’s ability to participate in the 2026 elections.
It reports over 350,000 party affiliates face politically motivated charges, with at least 130,000 arrests since the fall of the previous government.
The group condemns the use of anti-terrorism laws to suppress opposition, citing operations like “Operation Devil Hunt,” and calls for the ban to be lifted, arbitrary charges reviewed, and peaceful political activity restored.
