Two armed men stole eight Matisse engravings and five Portinari works from São Paulo’s Mario de Andrade Library.
Eight engravings by Henri Matisse and five works by Brazilian artist Candido Portinari were stolen in a daytime armed robbery at São Paulo’s Mario de Andrade Library on December 7, 2025.
Two armed men held up a security guard and an elderly visitor, entered a glass dome housing the art, and fled with the pieces from the exhibition “From the Book to the Museum.” The stolen works included rare Matisse engravings from his 1947 book "Jazz."
Authorities are investigating using security footage, but no arrests have been made.
The incident follows a high-profile theft at the Louvre in Paris earlier in the year.
The artwork’s value remains undisclosed.
