Tasmanian distillery founder Keith Batt pleads not guilty to defrauding investors of over $500K via fake whisky barrels.
Keith Batt, 63, founder of Tasmania’s Nant Distillery, has pleaded not guilty to 622 fraud charges and 48 counts of dishonestly obtaining a financial advantage over a scheme from 2007 to 2016.
Prosecutors allege he defrauded investors of over $500,000 by selling whisky barrels—priced up to $7,500—promising future profits, though many barrels were empty, never existed, or were tampered with.
Some barrels were reportedly emptied and sold without investor knowledge, and false certification seals were applied.
The company collapsed in 2017, leaving investors, including those using superannuation funds, with major losses.
A trial is set for March 24, 2026, in Hobart’s Supreme Court.
