Nigerian groups push for 182 new women’s seats in parliament to boost representation from 4.2% to 25% over 16 years.
Nigerian civil society groups and women leaders are urging the 10th National Assembly to pass the Reserved Seats for Women Bill, which would add 182 temporary seats to increase female representation in national and state legislatures.
With women currently holding just 4.2% of legislative seats—21 out of 469—the bill aims to address systemic underrepresentation, cultural barriers, and gender-based violence.
Advocates, including government officials and international partners, say the measure is essential for inclusive governance and stronger policy outcomes, noting that Nigeria ranks among Africa’s lowest in women’s political participation.
The bill, requiring constitutional amendment and approval by 24 states, would remain in place for 16 years to build women’s political capacity.
