New Zealand’s Children’s Commissioner launches “Dear Children” campaign to prevent child abuse and homicides after two 2025 killings.
Dr. Claire Achmad, New Zealand’s Children’s Commissioner, has launched the “Dear Children” campaign to combat child abuse and preventable homicides, urging all adults to take responsibility for protecting children.
The initiative, launched ahead of summer, follows two child killings in early 2025 and highlights that over the past decade, 113 children under 17 were killed by homicide—about one every four to five weeks—with two-thirds under five.
New Zealand has one of the highest rates of under-five child deaths among similar nations.
The campaign centers on a public letter affirming children’s right to safety, encouraging adults to sign online, listen to children, and break cycles of abuse.
Support came from survivors and government officials, including Minister Karen Chhour, who emphasized the need for cultural change in child protection.
