New Zealand exports 8 tonnes of innovative wool products to Japan, marking a major boost for farmers and high-value wool use.
New Zealand has secured its first commercial export of innovative wool particle products, with a Japanese personal care company ordering 8 tonnes from Wool Source, a unit of the Wool Research Organisation of New Zealand.
The milestone, supported by a $3.48 million government investment in an $8.72 million programme, advances the transformation of strong wool into high-value materials for cosmetics, paints, and inks.
Rural Communities Minister Mark Patterson called it a “Holy Grail” achievement, boosting returns for farmers.
The government also plans to use wool in state housing carpets starting July 2025.
Wool exports reached $555 million in the year to June 2025, highlighting the sector’s economic significance.
