New NZ forum to shape more inclusive census data for Māori and diverse groups.
Stats NZ has launched the Crown-Māori Statistical Design Forum, the first of several community design groups, to shape the next census and improve data collection for Māori and other diverse communities.
The initiative, part of a shift toward using administrative data and annual surveys, aims to make statistics more inclusive, frequent, and relevant.
The Forum will guide how iwi data needs are met, including how affiliation and classifications are handled, with input from Māori leaders, data experts, and organisations.
Other groups will soon follow, focusing on Pacific, disabled, ethnic, LGBTIQ+, and homeless populations.
The changes reflect legal and Treaty obligations, with ongoing public involvement expected.
