Megadeth, the thrash metal band founded by Dave Mustaine in 1983, will retire after a farewell tour and the release of a final self-titled album on January 23, 2026.
Mustaine cited severe health issues, including arthritis, spinal injuries, and a fused spine, as reasons for stepping down, stating he can no longer perform at full capacity.
The tour, beginning February 2026 across North America, will honor the band’s legacy, including its 40th anniversary of the debut album.
Though Mustaine plans to continue music in another form, the band will disband permanently after the tour ends.
A memoir is also scheduled for release next year.
