A 28-year-old Kenyan man, Augustine Kiprono, was sentenced to three years in prison for a 2025 hit-and-run crash on the A53 near Leek, where he struck a motorcycle ridden by Stuart and Valerie Heath, a couple from North Staffordshire.
Kiprono, who was nearly one-and-a-half times over the legal alcohol limit and driving with cloned plates, fled the scene after colliding with the bike while attempting to overtake a lorry.
The Heath couple, aged 68 and 66, suffered severe injuries—Stuart with a broken leg and arm, Valerie with a fractured thigh—and now face lasting physical and emotional challenges, including loss of independence and inability to work.
Kiprono, unlicensed and with four passengers, will be deported to Kenya after his sentence.
