Ireland outpaces Northern Ireland in employment, income, and life expectancy, despite higher unemployment, according to a Dec. 8, 2025, ESRI report.
A new ESRI report released December 8, 2025, reveals persistent economic and social disparities between the Republic of Ireland and Northern Ireland.
Ireland has higher employment (75.1%) and labour force participation (78.5%) rates, greater disposable income, higher hourly earnings, and longer life expectancy—80.9 years for men and 84.2 for women—compared to Northern Ireland’s 74.3% and 75.7%, and 78.9 and 82.7 years, respectively.
Ireland’s population grew 14.8% from 2015 to 2024, far outpacing Northern Ireland’s 3.9%.
Despite a higher unemployment rate in Ireland (4.4% vs. 1.8%), the report highlights differences in governance and economic structure, while noting shared goals in productivity, competitiveness, and decarbonisation.
The annual study, launched by Tanaiste Simon Harris and conducted with the Shared Island Unit, aims to strengthen cross-border cooperation and inform policy through long-term data tracking.
