India's telecom regulator rejects higher satellite fees and urban connection charges, urging government-led efforts for affordable broadband in remote areas.
India’s telecom regulator TRAI has rejected the Department of Telecommunications’ proposal to raise satellite spectrum fees from 4% to 5% of revenue and to introduce a conditional discount for serving remote areas.
TRAI maintained its original stance, opposing a ₹500 per connection fee in urban areas, warning it could worsen the digital divide by incentivizing providers to focus on wealthier markets.
Instead, TRAI recommended government-led initiatives to expand affordable satellite broadband in hard-to-reach regions, emphasizing equitable access and the importance of affordable user terminals.
