Guyana reopens Couva Children’s Hospital after 10 years, treating children and expanding services with new equipment and regional medical support.
Prime Minister Kamla Persad-Bissessar announced the rededication of Guyana’s Couva Children’s Hospital after a decade of closure due to alleged neglect, with nearly $100 million in medical equipment rendered unusable.
Since phased operations began in late 2024, the hospital has completed 86 surgeries and treated 16 children in specialized clinics, reducing a national waiting list exceeding 11,300 cases.
The government plans to expand services with MRI and CT imaging, ophthalmology, and digital health records, while launching a regional partnership that could deploy up to 50 Trinidad and Tobago doctors to Guyana.
The Children’s Life Fund has been strengthened to support urgent overseas treatments, and private donations, including medical supplies and wheelchairs, have aided the effort.
