Barnaby Joyce leaves the Nationals for One Nation, citing leadership issues, and will run for Senate in 2028.
Barnaby Joyce, former deputy prime minister and New England MP, has officially left the Nationals to join One Nation, citing broken relations with party leadership and sidelining after the May 2025 election.
He will serve in the House of Representatives until the 2028 election, then run for a Senate seat in New South Wales.
Joyce, who will be the first One Nation member in the lower house since the late 1990s, expressed respect for leader Pauline Hanson but confirmed he will not become her deputy.
The move has drawn criticism from Nationals leader David Littleproud, who called it a breach of trust.
Recent polling shows One Nation’s support at 14–18%, with 29% of voters more likely to support the party under Joyce’s leadership.
