Three 20-storey residential towers in Motherwell—Allan, Coursington, and Draffen—were demolished in a controlled explosion on December 7, 2025, as part of a 25-year plan to remove all 48 high-rise buildings in the area.
Built in 1969 and 1970, each tower stood 58 meters tall and housed 117 flats.
The operation, carried out by Thompsons of Prudhoe, used 4,120 explosive charges and included a large exclusion zone to ensure safety.
Former resident Danny Devine, 91, and schoolboy Joseph Carroll, 9, jointly triggered the implosion.
The site will be cleared of 20,000 tonnes of debris, making way for new mixed-amenity housing.
The council emphasized safety, planning, and community cooperation throughout the process.
