Taiwan’s president reaffirmed democracy, human rights, and transitional justice, honoring victims of past repression.
President William Lai reaffirmed Taiwan’s dedication to democracy and human rights at a World Human Rights Day event, calling the island a “lighthouse of democracy in Asia” and vowing to resist external authoritarian threats.
He highlighted efforts to restore historical truth, preserve sites of past injustice, and integrate lessons from the martial law era (1949–1987) into education, while issuing 4,000 restoration of honor certificates to victims.
