South Korea won’t use U.S. joint drills as leverage to restart North Korea talks, despite Pyongyang’s objections.
South Korea has ruled out using its joint military exercises with the U.S. as leverage to restart talks with North Korea, according to National Security Advisor Wi Sung-lac.
Despite Pyongyang’s long-standing opposition to the drills, Seoul says adjusting them is not part of its current diplomatic approach.
The statement comes amid stalled diplomacy since President Lee Jae Myung took office, with North Korea yet to respond to Seoul’s proposal for military talks to clarify the border and prevent clashes.
Wi said the omission of North Korea in the U.S. National Security Strategy reflects the administration’s "America First" focus, not indifference.
South Korea maintains the drills are defensive and continues to balance military readiness with efforts to ease tensions and pursue dialogue.
Corea del Sur no usará los ejercicios conjuntos de EE.UU. como palanca para reiniciar las conversaciones con Corea del Norte, a pesar de las objeciones de Pyongyang.
