New Zealand's environment ministry cut staff by 27% amid economic stress, yet delivered a record number of outputs.
New Zealanders are focusing more on immediate financial pressures than environmental issues, according to James Palmer, head of the Ministry for the Environment.
He cited widespread household and business stress as key factors, noting a 27% drop in ministry staff—from 1,010 to 738 full-time employees—due to restructuring.
Despite reduced staffing, the ministry delivered a record 4,822 outputs, including briefings and parliamentary responses.
Palmer acknowledged increased staff stress, with 54% reporting frequent stress, and attributed strain to the fast pace of government work and weak economic conditions.
He will step down to lead Earth Sciences New Zealand next year.
