A bullet-riddled marker honoring lynching victim Mary Turner is now displayed in Atlanta with a multimedia exhibit.
A bullet-pocked historical marker honoring Mary Turner, a pregnant Black woman lynched in 1918 in rural Georgia after demanding justice for her husband and at least 10 others, is now on display at Atlanta’s National Center for Civil and Human Rights.
The marker, repeatedly vandalized with gunfire and vehicle damage, was removed for preservation and now features a multimedia exhibit with projected text and audio recordings of Turner’s descendants.
The lynching, investigated by NAACP founder Walter White, helped spur early anti-lynching efforts, though federal hate crime legislation was not passed until 2022.
The exhibit aims to preserve memory, confront historical silence, and foster healing.
