Bangladeshi phone traders protested the NEIR launch, demanding lower taxes and import freedom to prevent price hikes and protect small businesses.
On December 7, 2025, mobile phone traders in Bangladesh blocked a major Dhaka road outside the BTRC office, protesting the upcoming National Equipment Identity Register (NEIR) system set to launch on December 16.
Organized by the Mobile Business Community Bangladesh, the demonstration demanded reforms to the NEIR, unrestricted imports, and lower taxes, arguing the current rules threaten hundreds of thousands of small traders, could raise consumer prices, and favor a few large companies.
The protest caused major traffic disruptions and led to a nationwide shutdown of mobile shops.
The BTRC acknowledged concerns and promised to present demands to government officials, with a decision expected soon.
