Congress leader Sonia Gandhi accused the Modi government of a coordinated effort to vilify Jawaharlal Nehru, claiming it seeks to erase his legacy and undermine India’s secular, scientific, and planned development foundations.
Speaking at the December 5, 2025, launch of the Nehru Centre India in New Delhi, she condemned what she called a systematic campaign to distort Nehru’s contributions to independence and nation-building.
Gandhi emphasized his role in shaping modern India through secularism, scientific temper, and economic planning, and criticized the promotion of an ideology she said glorifies Gandhi’s assassins and fosters hate and communalism.
She called defending Nehru’s legacy a duty to uphold constitutional values and reason.
The event also marked the launch of a free, searchable digital archive of 100 volumes of Nehru’s writings.
