Pope appoints Bishop Li to lead Xinxiang diocese amid ongoing religious restrictions in China.
Bishop Francis Li Jianlin was appointed by Pope Leo XIV on August 11, 2025, to lead the Apostolic Prefecture of Xinxiang in Henan Province, China, following the resignation of underground bishop Joseph Zhang Weizhu, who was arrested in 2021 and remains unaccounted for.
The appointment, made under the 2018 Sino-Vatican agreement, marks the second episcopal appointment in China during the sede vacante after Pope Francis’s death.
Li, 51, was elected by local clergy in April 2025 before the new pope’s election, raising questions about procedural compliance.
His ordination took place in Weihui, led by Beijing’s Bishop Li Shan, though the Chinese government’s Catholic Patriotic Association did not acknowledge the event.
Meanwhile, a church in Xuchang was forcibly closed for allowing minors to attend services, reflecting ongoing state restrictions on religious gatherings.
