The Pittsburgh Pirates have claimed infielder/outfielder Marco Luciano off waivers from the San Francisco Giants, adding him to their 40-man roster.
Luciano, a former top prospect, struggled offensively in Triple-A and MLB, with a combined .227/.351/.401 slash line in Triple-A and a .217/.286/.304 mark in 126 MLB plate appearances.
The Giants claimed him to clear roster space, as Luciano had exhausted minor league options and was shifted to outfield and DH.
The Pirates, who recently acquired Jhostynxon García, view Luciano as a right-handed-hitting depth option, with his role dependent on spring training performance.
The move is part of broader roster adjustments ahead of the Rule 5 Draft.
